The new freight terminal at Ganddal will increase capacity and improve flexibility to meet future demands for goods transport in the Stavanger area.

Along with other measures, the terminal at Ganddal enables goods trains to make the return journey between Oslo and Stavanger within 24 hours. Terminal time has been cut by two hours and operator costs have been reduced.
Also, capacity on the line between Ganddal and Stavanger will be freed for passenger services.
Construction work commenced in December 2005 and the terminal started operations on 2nd January 2008. Total cost will be around 458 MNOK.
The new terminal comprises:
- a marshalling yard with three tracks
- a switching area with different marshalling tracks and dead-end tracks
- a terminal area with two loading sidings
- a shipping agent area west of the terminal area
Ganddal replaces the old freight terminals in Stavanger and Sandnes, which had become ineffective due to space constraints and inefficient track arrangements. The old terminal sites will now be freed for town development.
