By train in Norway

09.12.2009 The Norwegian railway network stretches from Kristiansand in the south to Bodø, above the Arctic Circle. It is even possible to travel by train to Narvik, which is connected to the Swedish railway network. The Norwegian railway network is more than 4,000 kilometres long, with a total of 775 tunnels and more than 3,000 bridges. The most famous routes are the Bergen line and the Flåm line, although most of the routes go through changing, scenic countryside, deep forests, mountains, and lakes and fjords.

The Bergen Line 1909 – 2009

27.11.2009 On 27th November 1909, a railway between Norway’s two largest cities was opened: the Bergen Line. At the same time, one of Europe’s most spectacular railways was opened to traffic. The Bergen Line remains one of the world’s most famous railways and as recently as spring, 2009, was voted one of the 20 best railway journeys in the world. The 100 year anniversary will be marked with several events throughout the year.

100 years in the mountains

20.05.2009 This year, it is one hundred years since the Bergen Line opened. Throughout this time, the railway line has been present in the high mountains with the personnel and equipment necessary to keep the line between Norway’s two largest cities open.

The Bergen Line on stamps

20.05.2009 The Norwegian postal service is celebrating the Bergen Line’s 100 year anniversary with an issue of stamps with themes from different sections of the line, plus a valuable album garnished with stamps, postcards and historical articles.

New National Transport Plan

30.03.2009 New double tracks will be built in the south-eastern region and important development projects launched in the Bergen and Trondheim areas. This will make room for far more trains, shorter travel times and more reliable train operation. Passing loops will be built along the entire rail network to reduce travel time and double capacity to transport goods by rail.

Freight transport by rail brings new challenges and new opportunities

21.01.2009 Rail freight transport has undergone a period of strong, very pleasing growth in recent years. This has brought new challenges for railway infrastructure. As part of its work on a new National Transport Plan (2010 – 2019), the National Rail Administration has therefore developed a strategy that describes necessary infrastructure-related and organisational moves in the years to come, making it possible for rail freight transport to continue growing.

General technology strategy

13.01.2009 Jernbaneverket, the Norwegian National Rail Administration, has unveiled its new general technology strategy. Jernbaneverket is currently facing major technological challenges in choosing technical systems for the future.

Highspeed -lines: Further steps should be taken

30.11.2008 A German consulting group, Verkehrswissenschaftliches Institut Stuttgart GmbH (VWI), has completed a feasibility study concerning high-speed rail lines in Norway. The study’s conclusion is that further steps should be taken to bring the scheme to fruition. Jernbaneverket, the Norwegian National Rail Administration, will now study the findings and propose appropriate further action to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
