PQ documents for TBM EPC released

The Follo Line Project has released the pre-qualification documents for the TBM Tunnel EPC contract. This marks the start of a comprehensive process of finding a main entrepreneur to build the longest railway tunnel ever in Norway.

The pre-qualification is the first step in a competition that will be performed as a two-step procedure:

  1. Pre-qualification
  2. Invitation to tender (ITT)

As a result of the pre-qualification a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 candidates will receive an ITT. The ITT will be issued in the fall 2013.

The pre-qualification process aims to detect an entrepreneur based on a set of criteria which includes:

  • Project Delivery  Experience
  • Technical expertise and experience
  • Capacity

About the tunnel
The Follo Line Project is the largest transport project in Norway. The scheduled start of construction for the project is mid 2014 with completion in 2020.

The Follo Line tunnel, which will have a total length of 20 km., will be constructed primarily with four TBMs. It’s the first time TBM will be used to build a railway tunnel in Norway. From the main rig area at Åsland outside Oslo, two TBMs will bore southwards to the tunnel portal at Langhus, while a further two TBMs will bore northwards to Bekkelaget.

This is the first time in Norway that a twin bore railway tunnel will be built. The main reasons why this solution has been adopted is future operation and maintenance, safety and optimum train/traffic handling. A better train/ traffic handling will enable a 50% reduction in journey time between Oslo and the public transport hub at Ski, and provide a significant increase in capacity to/from Oslo.
